Facade and southern perimeter of the fourteenth-century church

Beneath the floor of the north nave of the fifteenth-century church (15th century), excavations have uncovered the remains of the south nave and part of the façade wall of the older church, built in the early fourteenth century (14th century) and evidence of the city's early Franciscan settlement. Outside these structures, funerary chapels and tombs have been identified, some contemporary with the first church, others later.

Fortunately, these archaeological remains were spared by the installation of the heating system in 1965, when the San Francesco complex was used by the Military District (a fate common to many convent complexes after the suppression of religious orders).
