In 2000, Vladimir Putin spoke about his life for the only time, publicly ahead of the presidential elections. It's a chilling biography, in which he spares no detail of extreme violence, describing himself as a streetwise kid who quickly devoted himself entirely to the cause of the Secret Services, which he saw as a mirage of power and absolute control. Stefano Massini draws on that material and combines it with excerpts from Putin's speeches and conferences, as well as revelations from numerous historical essays and reconstructions of the shadows of his dizzying rise to power. What emerges is a ferocious and shocking tale, set against the backdrop of the collapsing Soviet system, which engulfs everything in an endless apocalypse.
