What will become of liberal democracy? A future to be deciphered
The Cespec 2025 workshop will address, from diverse and intertwined perspectives, one of the most pressing issues of our time: the crisis of liberal democracy. Following its global rise throughout the twentieth century, today we are witnessing a growing distrust of democratic-constitutional systems, eroded by populism, authoritarian leadership, and plebiscitary political models. Phenomena such as sovereignism, social insecurity, and the backlash against globalization and immigration fuel widespread discontent, resulting in disruptive electoral decisions, the weakening of institutions that guarantee democracy, and a crisis of legitimacy within the European Union. In this scenario, the difficulty democracies face in responding to the concrete needs of citizens paves the way for authoritarian simplifications and a shift in cultural paradigms, with profound repercussions on the international geopolitical balance. The three scheduled events will serve as a space for analysis and discussion to understand the transformations underway and imagine the possible future trajectories of liberal democracies.
