War reporter Greta Cristini visits Cuneo to reflect on Duccio Galimberti's legacy
Cuneo remembers, eighty-two years later, the speech that marked the city's entry into the history of the Resistance. On July 26, 1943, the day after Mussolini's fall, lawyer Duccio Galimberti spoke from the terrace in what was then Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. He did so with simple yet terrible words: "The war continues... until the last German is expelled [...] Long live Italy, long live freedom." He said it when everything was still uncertain, when the end of the regime did not yet mean peace. It was not a rhetorical gesture, but an act of truth paid for with his life. His sacrifice remains a living legacy for the city that has not forgotten him. For this reason, Cuneo returns to that same square, now dedicated to him, with an event to ensure that his figure remains a beacon for new generations: on Saturday, July 26, at 9:00 p.m., war reporter and geopolitical analyst Greta Cristini will read excerpts from that speech and offer a reflection on the profound meaning of freedom, now that the term is used too lightly and poorly remembered.
Who is Greta Cristini?
A geopolitical analyst, reporter, and writer, a Sorbonne graduate and former anti-corruption lawyer in the United States, she returned to Italy after eight years of studying and working abroad in Paris, Brussels, and New York. From March 2022, she spent months on the ground covering the Russo-Ukrainian war in Ukraine, and in October 2023, she spent over a month in Israel and Palestine to cover the war in the Middle East, writing for various publications such as Limes, Il Messaggero, Huffington Post, and providing reporting for RAI, Mediaset, and La7. In 2023, she published her first book, Geopolitics. “Understanding the World at War,” (Piemme), with a preface by Lucio Caracciolo. Author and voice of the podcast “Il Grande Gioco” and editor of the newsletter “Extrema Ratio,” she holds seminars and conferences at companies and universities and is a frequent guest on television commenting on international current affairs. He is now in bookstores with his latest book published by Giunti in collaboration with the Navy on the first deployment of the Italian Aircraft Carrier Group in the Indo-Pacific, which he followed during part of his voyage in the China Sea aboard the aircraft carrier Cavour in September 2024.
