Is the revolution a gala dinner or not?
Comparing historical experiences to reflect on the dilemmas of entire generations: does it make sense to take up arms? Does it make sense to be pacifists?
ITINERARIES 2026 – REVOLUTION, TODAY!
Is the revolution a gala dinner or not?
Carlo Greppi in conversation with Gigi Garelli
Throughout contemporary history, movements, revolts, resistance movements, and protests have attempted to transform political and social structures, sometimes through peaceful means, sometimes by resorting to violence.
Which means have led to lasting change? Which, instead, have produced failures, repression, or new forms of oppression? Are there criteria for judging these choices?
The meeting will attempt to compare different historical experiences to reflect on the dilemmas that have plagued entire generations: does it make sense to take up arms? Does it make sense to be pacifists?
Carlo Greppi is one of the most active and authoritative voices in the dissemination of contemporary history in Italy. A PhD in Historical Studies from the University of Turin, he has published sixteen books with several of Italy's leading publishing houses, and his works have been translated into seven languages and published in ten countries. His intellectual journey is guided by the goal of "humanizing history," placing centrality in individual lives and the "voices" that typically remain on the margins of major events. This approach takes a civic perspective that aims to make every citizen feel an integral part of the historical process, making the past a living tool for informed living in the present. An editorial consultant for Laterza, since 2020 he has edited the successful series "Fact Checking: History Put to the Test," a project aimed at putting the rigor of scientific research at the service of historical knowledge, countering the distortions of public memory. His work as a public historian is constantly intertwined with contemporary languages: among other things, he is the scientific director of the contemporary history festival /contè.sto/ of the Municipality of Empoli, has collaborated with Rai Storia, and regularly contributes to Radio Tre and various newspapers. A founding member of the Deina association, he has organized memory trips and educational programs for schools and the public for years.
