ITINERARIES 2026 – REVOLUTION, TODAY!
Gen Z in the streets: protests and disruptions in South Asia.
Featuring Simone Pieranni

From Sri Lanka to Nepal to India, a new generation is taking to the streets and challenging governments, political parties, and established forms of power. From the Aragalaya protests in Sri Lanka to the Nepalese protests to the recent "Cockroaches" movement in India, the mobilizations have placed corruption, inequality, and rights at the center.

But behind these revolts there is something more than a generational issue: South Asia is one of the decisive spaces of geopolitical competition between India, China and the United States.

Do Gen Z protests represent a new form of politics, or are they the contemporary expression of older conflicts? How do they relate to great-power competition?

Simone Pieranni, journalist and author, has been reporting on Asia's transformations for nearly twenty years. He lived in China from 2006 to 2014, where he founded China Files and headed the foreign editorial staff of il manifesto. He is currently in charge of journalism podcasts at Chora Media, for which he produces Altri Orienti and Fuori da qui. He is the author, among other publications, of the essay "2100. Come sarà l'Asia, come sarà noi," a finalist for the 2025 Strega Prize for Nonfiction.
