Cuneo Mountain Festival 2026 – “Sconfini”
Four days of talks, conferences, screenings, concerts, exhibitions, and outdoor experiential activities, all under the common theme of "crossing borders," an invitation to step out of your comfort zone and explore the highlands beyond prejudice and stereotypes. This is the fourth edition of the Cuneo Montagna Festival, which will take place from Thursday, May 14th to Sunday, May 17th, 2026, in a distributed format. Organized by the Municipality of Cuneo, with the patronage of the Piedmont Region, Uncem Piemonte, the Province of Cuneo, and the Cuneo Chamber of Commerce, and in collaboration with many local partners, the event is the tip of the iceberg of the metropolitan reflection launched in 2022 by the city of Cuneo with the establishment of a dedicated department. The festival program was unveiled today (Saturday, April 18) at Open Baladin, opening the talk "Beyond Escapism and the Stopwatch: Endurance as a Collective Experience," organized in collaboration with Scrittorincittà. During the talk, English anthropologist, writer, and runner Michael Crawley spoke with Gabriele Bonuomo, running expert and owner of Outdoor. Running is Medicine.
The Cuneo Montagna Festival features numerous events, from evenings at the Monviso cinema, between sport, with cross-country skiing legend Federico “Chicco” Pellegrino (Friday 15 May), and Davide Rivero, a trail runner from Cuneo who won the 2025 “Tor 130. Tot Dret” (Saturday 16 May), and cinema, with a memory of Nino Perino, mountain guide, ski instructor and historic rescuer who passed away last December, through images and words (Thursday 14 May), and a preview of Fredo Valla's film dedicated to Hans Clemer (Sunday 17 May), to the debut, on Saturday 16 May, of stand-up comedy with Antonio Piazza and Emanuele Tumolo and the live podcast with the Brocchi sui Blocchi collective. And there are also conferences: "Montesplora: a mountain education project," organized by the University of Turin's Mountain Science and Technology degree program with the support of Alpine Lions Cooperation; the third edition of "Voices. Dialogues on Alpine Architecture," organized by the Art.ur association with architects Dario Castellino and Alice Lusso; the PITER ALPIMED+ Cross-Border Assembly Festival; and "Sentinels of Stone. Memory and Future of Cuneo's Alpine Fortifications," presented by the Cuneo delegation of the FAI in collaboration with the Artea Foundation. Thanks to the synergy with the Occit'amo festival, Piazza Virginio will once again be the setting for music and dance, including from beyond the Alps. Two exhibitions will be held :one in the corridor in front of the Hall of Honor of the Cuneo City Hall, celebrating the first thirty years of the Compagnia del Buon Cammino; and "On the Edge of Oblivion. The Forts of the Maritime Alps," set up under the porticoes of Via Roma. Also in Via Roma, on Saturday, May 16th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday, May 17th from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, the Alpine Village will be a space where you can learn about, listen to, and encounter the mountains.

On Saturday May 9th (10 am - 1 pm and 2 - 6 pm) and Sunday May 10th (10 am - 1 pm), La Casa del Fiume (Piazzale W. Cavallera, 19) will host the writing workshop "What We Talk About When We Talk About Stories," led by writer Davide Longo. The workshop, which focuses on mountains and valleys, costs €10. WEDNESDAY, MAY 13
At 9:00 pm, at the Monviso Cinema (Via XX Settembre, 14), multidisciplinary artist Yuval Avital and Francesco Moneta, president of the Culture+Business Committee, will present the experience of "Mountain Echoes," an exploration of Valtellina that explores its stories, values, characters, natural environments, animals, sites, and traditional and innovative production processes. In the fall of 2025, Yuval Avital made his first trip to Valtellina, Lombardy's Olympic mountain, recording sounds and voices at 25 locations for a total of 34 hours, taking 603 photographs and videos, and involving over 500 people. The result is three polyphonic works diffused by three sound sculptures in the shape of anthropomorphic mountains between 3 and 4 metres high, and a multimedia exhibition, first set up in a dispersed manner in Valtellina between Sondrio, Bormio and Tirano, and then brought together in Milan, at the Bagni Misteriosi of the Teatro Franco Parenti.

THURSDAY, MAY 14
At 9:00 a.m. in the San Giovanni Hall (Via Roma, 4), the conference "Montesplora: A Mountain Education Project," organized by the University of Turin's Mountain Science and Technology degree program with the support of Alpine Lions Cooperation, will explore the project "Montesplora. Interdisciplinary exploration of the mountain environment," a comprehensive interdisciplinary training program based on direct experiences in mountain environments.
From 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., the CRC Foundation's Meeting Space (Via Roma, 15) will host the first act of the third edition of "Voices. Dialogues on Alpine Architecture," a series of meetings aimed at home design professionals organized by the Art.ur association with architects Dario Castellino and Alice Lusso, curated and moderated by Maria Chiara Voci and Carlotta Rocci.
At 5:00 pm, in the Hall of Honor of the Municipality of Cuneo (Via Roma, 28), the presentation of the exhibition "At the Borders of Oblivion. The Forts of the Maritime Alps," an artistic recollection by French photographer Michel Eisenlohr, will take place. The exhibition, which has a counterpart in the Nice area, explores the relationship between memory, oblivion, and borders, forming part of a research and development project aimed at rediscovering and reinterpreting the historical traces that have marked the Alpine region. The inauguration of the exhibition, which will be on display in Via Roma until July 5, will follow the meeting.
At 6:00 p.m., the CDT multipurpose room (Largo Barale, 1) will host the multi-voiced debate "Where are we (trail) running?" Alberto Dellacroce, Marco Goglino, Alice Minetti, Paolo Molinengo, and Gabriele Pascon, organizers of competitive and non-competitive trail running, will discuss the current state of the art of trail running races, moderated by Luca Dalmasso, runner and author, with Paolo Viano, of the book "Gialloneri. Storia e leggenda della Podistica Valle Varaita" (Fusta Editore). Davide Lauro, president of the ASD Fausto Coppi on the Road, will open the discussion, describing the commitment of the international cycling granfondo La Fausto Coppi to protecting mountain roads.
At 6.30 pm, in the hall of honour of the Municipality of Cuneo (via Roma, 28), the Cuneo section of the CAI will present “InAlto”, the Cuneo portal of mountain photography, which collects archives of families and local mountaineers who have the mountains of the Granda as their central theme, taken in the historical period that goes from the shots of the pioneers up to 1974, the year in which the first century of life of the CAI Cuneo occurs.
At 9 pm at the Monviso Cinema (Via XX Settembre, 14), "Remembering Nino" will be a tribute to Nino Perino, a mountain guide, ski instructor, and historic rescuer, who passed away last December. He will be remembered with images from Davide Demichelis' documentary "Se Chanta. Nino and the Maira Valley of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," along with words from Pepi Cherasco (Piedmontese Alpine and Speleological Rescue), writer Linda Cottino, director Davide Demichelis, Daniele Fontana, deputy vice president of the Piedmontese Alpine and Speleological Rescue, Carlo Garelli (former station master of the Piedmontese Alpine and Speleological Rescue), and Gianni Rosano, a disciple of Perino.
FRIDAY, MAY 15
From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. , the CRC Foundation's Meeting Space (Via Roma, 15) will host the second and third acts of the third edition of "Voices. Dialogues on Alpine Architecture," a series of meetings aimed at home design professionals organized by the Art.ur association with architects Dario Castellino and Alice Lusso, curated and moderated by Maria Chiara Voci and Carlotta Rocci.
At 9:30 a.m., Luca Gibello, architectural historian and publicist, will bring his lecture-show, “The Enchantment of Refuge, 2000 Meters Above Human Things,” to the Cuneo prison.
From 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the exhibition hall of the Province of Cuneo (Corso Nizza, 23), the PITER ALPIMED+ Cross-Border Assembly Festival will focus on the theme of "Conscious Management and Consumption of Water," a vital resource for regional resilience in the face of climate change. The program will include institutional and technical events, with the presentation of the ALPIMED+ ECOTOUR, ALPIMED+ ECOTERR, and ALPIMED+ PCC projects, as well as participatory discussion sessions. At 2:30 pm, at Spazio Varco (Via Carlo Pascal, 5/L), “SconfinAmici. Three Schools, a Mountain of Emotions” will take place, a transdisciplinary artistic performance curated by the nursery schools of Cerialdo, Confreria, and Ronchi (IC Cuneo Oltrestura). The delicate nature of reading and the expressive power of art and dance intertwine in a narrative that becomes poetry.
At 3:00 pm in the Hall of Honor of the Cuneo City Hall (Via Roma, 28), the Cuneo FAI Delegation, in collaboration with the Artea Foundation, presents "Sentinels of Stone. Memory and Future of Cuneo's Alpine Fortifications," a conference exploring history and identity and transforming the border into shared heritage. Speakers include Daniele De Angelis, an architect with a passion for 19th- and 20th-century military architecture; Massimo Robotti, a scholar of 19th-century military history; Anna Bertola, director of the Heritage Department of the Municipality of Cuneo and former Head of the Technical Office of the Municipality of Vinadio; Davide De Luca, director of the Artea Foundation; and Loris Emanuel, president of the Valle Stura Mountain Union.
At 5:30 pm, again in the Hall of Honor of the Cuneo City Hall (Via Roma, 28), the Unione Montana Valle Stura will present "La Routo," a cross-border hiking trail of over 500 kilometers along the ancient transhumance routes, starting from Arles. Created in 2023, the route was extended from Borgo San Dalmazzo to Cuneo in 2026, reflecting the strong bond the capital has maintained and continues to maintain with the surrounding valleys.
At 6 pm, in the CDT multipurpose room (largo Barale, 1), Giorgio Daidola and Igor Napoli, interpreters of a vagabond style of skiing far from the standard one of artificial snow slopes – for the former long crossings or in the thin air of 7000 and 8000 meter peaks, for the latter in search of the adrenaline rush of steep slopes – and authors of several books, will recount their emotions on the white snow in “Stories of vagabond skiers” through images and films of their lives as wandering skiers, alternating in the roles of interviewer and interviewee.
Also at 6 pm, at La Casa del Fiume (Piazzale W. Cavallera, 19), Sideralis aps will present "Materia Madre," a project that explores the connection between humanity and nature through artistic languages. On the one hand, the film "Darkness Matters" by director Costanza Julia Bani explores the essence of darkness through an immersive fulldome experience, shifting attention to the concept that the night is not something empty, or to be feared, but a living and vulnerable ecosystem. On the other, the photographic exhibition curated by Cortona On The Move recounts the physical and emotional "cages" experienced every day at the CRAS in Bernezzo. The project debuts at the Cuneo Montagna Festival with the Italian premiere of the film, followed by a traveling exhibition starting in September.
At 9:00 pm, at the Monviso Cinema (Via XX Settembre, 14), the "Chicco Pellegrino Confidential" evening will rewind the career of cross-country skiing legend Federico "Chicco" Pellegrino, which concluded in late March with the grand finale in Saint-Barthélemy, Aosta Valley. In conversation with Paolo Cornero, editor of Idea magazine, Pellegrino will retrace sixteen years at the highest level, during which he won two Olympic silver and two bronze medals, one of which he won on February 15th in Tesero in the 4 x 7.5 km relay with fellow Borgarino Martino Carollo, who is expected in the audience. He also won seven world championship medals, 18 individual World Cup victories, and two sprint World Cups. He earned widespread respect, as evidenced by his appointment as flag bearer for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.
SATURDAY, MAY 16
The Cuneo Montagna Festival's Saturday will kick off at 8:45 a.m. with a forest bathing session in the Parco della Resistenza led by Elisa Leger, Park Guide of the Maritime Alps Protected Areas. This immersive experience focuses on sensory awakening exercises to maximize the effect of natural shapes, colors, and sounds, reconnecting with the here and now, leaving behind your phone and your daily routine. Refreshments will follow at Famù nel Parco (Viale degli Angeli, 25). The event is free to attend, but reservations are required on Eventbrite by 12 noon on Thursday, May 14th.

Cavallera, 19), it will be possible to enjoy continuous screenings of the full-dome film "Darkness Matters" by Costanza Julia Bani, an immersive multimedia project that addresses light pollution through contrast, showcasing the wonders of darkness and revealing the ecosystems and wildlife that thrive in Tuscany's cultural landscapes and the natural forests and mountains of the Cuneo area. Combining scientific insight and poetic narrative, the film, part of Sideralis aps's "Materia Madre" project, invites a new relationship with the night, even from perspectives other than the human one.
From 10 am to 6 pm, Via Roma will be enlivened by the Alpine Village, with over thirty stands where you can learn about, listen to, and encounter the mountains.
At 10 a.m., in the Hall of Honor of the Cuneo City Hall (Via Roma 28), the conference "The Mountains Are Not Far Away. Transcending Mobility Models to Bring Territories and Services Together," promoted by the Cuneo City Council's Metromontagna Department, will explore how to overcome the limitations of traditional mobility through flexible transportation, collaborative networks, and participatory planning, restoring proximity to those who have chosen to live in the mountains.
At 10:00 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:45 p.m., starting from the Through Sport association stand in the Alpine Village on Via Roma, excursions will be offered in a joelette, an off-road wheelchair that allows people with mobility disabilities to participate in nature hikes. At 10:30 a.m., at Famù nel Parco (Viale degli Angeli, 25), the meeting "Mountain Therapy and Addictions. The Mountain as a Place of Health and a Space for Redemption" will highlight some recent mountain therapy experiences developed by the Addiction Service of the ASL CN1, the Italian Alpine Club, and the Maritime Alps Protected Areas. Speakers will include Carlo Mandrile (ASL CN1, SerD), Elisa Leger (Park Guide, Maritime Alps Protected Areas), and Irene Borgna (Maritime Alps Protected Areas). Moderator: Fabio Pellegrino (CAI Cuneo).
At 12 noon, in Via Roma, the ribbon-cutting of the Alpine village will take place.

At 3:00 PM, "The Fortifications of the Maritime Alps" by Paolo Ansaldi, produced by the Maritime Alps Protected Areas Management Agency; at 4:15 PM, "Mountain Time. ArchitetturAlpinA in Ten Stories," by Francesca Molteni and Davide Fois, produced by Muse Factory of Projects; at 5:30 PM, "Rifugio Roberto Barbero. Origin and History of a Place of the Soul," produced by CAI Cuneo, Friends of Roberto Barbero, the CAI Borgo San Dalmazzo subsection, and Corale La Baita; and at 6:15 PM, "Hipnotismi" by Andrea Morichini.

At 4 pm, at Open Baladin (Piazza Foro Boario), Irene Borgna (Aree Protette Alpi Marittime) and Giorgio Garavagno (CAI Cuneo) will draw on Borgna's latest book, “Cose che capitano in montagna” (CAI Edizioni), to suggest how to make the right decisions quickly in critical, sudden and unexpected circumstances during a mountain excursion.
At 6 pm, Open Baladin (Piazza Foro Boario) will transform into a recording studio: the talk "Generational Mountains: How Our Way of Being in the Mountains Is Changing" will become an episode of the podcast "Preferisco Ghisarmi" by Brocchi sui Boucchi, the largest climbing community in Italy. Together with the Maritime Alps Protected Areas and mountain guide Michele Perotti, the collective will explore the limits, consequences, and possibilities of being in the mountains as an opportunity to rethink our presence in these territories—not just spaces to be traversed, but ecosystems to be part of.
There are three evening programs, starting at 9 pm. At the Monviso Cinema (Via XX Settembre, 14), the premiere of the film “Linea rotta. La vita non è un Tot Dret,” a visual story by Daniele Molineris, a professional photographer specializing in sports photography, of Davide Rivero's preparation for the Tor 130. Tot Dret, a mountain running race from Gressoney-Saint-Jean to Courmayeur, between July and September 2025. The screening will be followed by a discussion between Molineris and Rivero. At Spazio Varco (Via Carlo Pascal, 5/L), stand-up comedy takes center stage: after the opening performance by Alessandro Cherry Cerato, in “Il declino di Santiago” Antonio Piazza and Emanuele Tumolo will debunk the myth of travel as a life-changing experience, starting with the Camino de Santiago, which was supposed to be important for both of them but instead went as journeys often do: badly, crooked, and with the constant feeling of having done everything wrong. In Piazza Virginio, there will be space for musical “border crossings” with the music of Lou Dalfin and their guests from across the Alps, Jean-Paul Faraut and the Fifres et Tambours du Pays Niçois, Eddi Gatti, drummer from the Vésubie valley, and the duo Vargoz from Dauphiné, in an evening organised by the Occit'amo festival.
Sunday, May 17
At 9:00 a.m., departing from La Casa del Fiume (Piazzale W. Cavallera, 19), Franco Michieli, geographer, explorer, and writer, will lead participants on a walk through the Gesso Stura River Park to introduce them to the art of natural orienteering, in conversation with Linda Cottino, journalist, writer, and mountaineer who recently shared an exploratory journey with him. The conversation will continue at La Casa del Fiume, to explore the almost revolutionary aspects of this approach.

At 10 a.m. at Famù nel Parco (Viale degli Angeli, 25), Enrico Collo, Gianluigi Origlia, and Massimo Robotti, three of the authors of the book "Altopiani della Gardetta. Alta valle Maira. Storie di montagne soldati fortificazioni" (Araba Fenice, 2026), will explain why the Gardetta Plateau can be considered a true open-air historical-military laboratory through a multidisciplinary approach that intertwines geography, history, and geology.

At 2 pm, in Piazza Virginio, an afternoon of Occitan dances by Occit'amo Festival with Daniela Mandrile and the Grande Orchestra Occitana (GOO).
At 3 pm, the Monviso Cinema (Via XX Settembre, 14) will host a screening of "Verrà un'altra estate," a documentary directed by Marco Ottaviano Graziano about the transhumance and life on the mountain pastures of Andrea Lando's farm. The film is promoted and funded by the ATL del Cuneo, in collaboration with Confagricoltura Cuneo and the Consorzio Turistico Valle Maira, and is sponsored by the Unione Montana Valle Maira and the Municipality of Caraglio.
At 3:00 PM at the Casa del Fiume (Piazzale W. Cavallera, 19), poet Francesco Terzago will present "Chimerical Herbs," a fantastical botany workshop in the metropolitan area, in collaboration with the Poeticôni festival. A reflection on the concept of meadow will be followed by a plant cataloguing that will focus on the participants' sensibilities, a recognition of the site's flora, and a writing activity in which the catalogued plants will be proposed as the habitat of a fantastical creature. The workshop will conclude with a collective presentation.
At 4 pm, at Open Baladin (Piazza Foro Boario), the meeting "Breaking Beyond Pain" addresses the ultimate "crossing the border"—death—through the story of the "Beyond the Summit" project, through which the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) has built a network of care, listening, and sharing to help those who, having suffered a bereavement or a traumatic mountain-related experience, are seeking a new balance, find meaning, a voice, and a possible path forward. Sofia Farina, host of the "Beyond the Summit" video podcast, will be in conversation with Cristina Giordana, mother of Luca Borgoni, a Cuneo mountaineer who died on the Matterhorn in July 2017; writer Enrico Camanni will be joining them.
At 5:30 pm at the Monviso Cinema (Via XX Settembre, 14), photographer Valerio Minato, whose trademark is bold alignments and original perspectives, will share his "Vision. The Plot of the Invisible," revealing what lies behind every shot, from complex astronomical calculations to planning tools, to anecdotes and behind-the-scenes glimpses of every single wait. A tale of invisible bonds that unite peaks, cities, and monuments to the sky and to the observer.
At 6:00 PM at Spazio Varco (Via Carlo Pascal, 5/L), Luca Gibello, architectural historian and publicist, will present the lecture-performance "The Enchantment of the Refuge, 2000 Meters Above Human Things" as he explores the history, symbols, geography, sociality, and architecture of Alpine refuges in an extraordinary journey of images, words, quotes, and music, divided into three themes: protection, hospitality, and forms.
At 9:00 pm, at the Monviso Cinema (Via XX Settembre, 14), the Cuneo Montagna Festival closes with a look to the future, with an evening of previews of director Fredo Valla's latest work, "Hans Clemer. An Unauthorized Biography," due out this fall. Valla and assistant director and producer Fabio Ferrero, in conversation with writer, poet, and journalist Gian Luca Favetto, who in the film retraces the itineraries of the Master of Elva with the slow pace of the pilgrims of old, share the behind-the-scenes story of the making of a work that seeks to demonstrate that Hans Clemer was not just a master of Elva, but an international painter.
BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
On Friday, May 22nd, at 3:00 pm, in the Hall of Honor of the Municipality of Cuneo (Via Roma, 28), following the unanimous approval by the Cuneo Provincial Council of the agenda for the protection of traditional chestnut groves and the chestnut supply chain, the discussion on the topic of chestnut growing will continue with the formalization of the network of chestnut-growing municipalities. Together with the Provincial Chestnut Growers' Committee, the network will meet with the regional councilors for Mountains, Marco Gallo, for Agriculture, Paolo Bongioanni, and for the Environment, Matteo Marnati, to discuss the actions to be taken to enhance and protect a supply chain that is the history, identity, and future of the Granda.
On Friday, May 22nd, at 8:45, the festival extends into the Grana Valley: the former Frise village school in Monterosso Grana will host a dialogue dedicated to the memories of places and the challenges of tomorrow, hosted by the Valle Grana Cultural Village. The evening will open with the presentation of the book "Happiness is when nothing happens" (People) by Rocco Olita, an exploration of a return to one's roots throughout Italy, from Friuli to Basilicata, of the value of slowness and a sense of community and resilience. Following this, Frise, a village historically linked to mining, becomes the ideal setting for the screening of the documentary film "Avenâl" by Anna Sandrini: a journey into the Predil Caves (Friuli), where the echoes of the mine and the toil of the past seek redemption in a possible future.
THE EXHIBITIONS OF THE CUNEO MONTAGNA FESTIVAL

A photographic exhibition chronicling the members' major travels and events, concluding with a selection of images taken on excursions throughout the four seasons. The exhibition project summarizes, with descriptions and images, the activities undertaken over the past 30 years, preserving the original vision of the three founding friends (Giulio Beuchod, Ermanno Bressy, and Erio Giordano), who have always been passionate about sports, culture, food, and the mountains. Today, as in the past, the Society continues to enthusiastically welcome members who love having fun, practicing outdoor sports, enjoying the sun, the landscape, the water, the snow, nature, and, last but not least, good food.

An artistic restitution by French photographer Michel Eisenlohr, created as part of the Interreg VI-A France-Italy ALCOTRA 2021-2027 cross-border project "Cognitio-Fort." Led by the Department of the Alpes-Maritimes in partnership with the Mercantour National Park, the Management Agency of the Protected Areas of the Alpes-Maritimes, and the Unione Montana Valle Stura, the project aims to enhance the Alpine fortified heritage. The exhibition, which has a counterpart in Nice, explores the relationships between memory, oblivion, and borders, part of a research and promotion project aimed at rediscovering and reinterpreting the historical traces that have marked the Alpine region. As part of the Cognitio-Fort project, Michel Eisenlohr engages with these places, highlighting often-overlooked meanings of our collective experience. His contemporary language fosters new perspectives for understanding and cultural participation in a widespread, yet often forgotten, heritage.
