[Meta]subjects. Humans and Their Others – Cespec Summer School 2025

Five days of reflection and discussion, open to the public, to demonstrate that in the contemporary world it is increasingly difficult to answer a seemingly simple question: what (who) is a subject? This question raises not only philosophical, but also, and above all, ethical and political questions.
The history of philosophy has repeatedly called into question the meaning of subjectivity. What does it mean to be human? What is a subject? What is the structure of subjectivity? Does being a subject mean being a conscious entity, a being capable of acting according to values, or something else? Are subjects or do we become subjects? And what are the boundaries of subjectivity? Are only human beings subjects? And which human beings? In contemporary debate, the growing interest in ecological issues and the philosophy of technology has led to a return to these fundamental questions. Are machines subjects? And what kind of subjectivity do animals and plants have? The theoretical problem is immediately connected to an ethical and political one: determining the meaning of subjectivity means drawing boundaries between inclusion and exclusion, deciding who deserves the title of subject. This creates a history of minor and minority subjectivities, alternatives, which still struggle for recognition.
