torchlight procession of freedom
Among the highlights of Resistenze 2025 is the Torchlight Procession for Freedom on Thursday, April 24, meeting at 8:30 pm at the Parco della Resistenza. This will be accompanied by a speech by Carlo Greppi, historian and writer, author of numerous essays on twentieth-century history, children's books, and textbooks, and editor of the Laterza series "Fact Checking: History Put to the Test of Facts." His latest essays are A Man of Few Words. The Story of Lorenzo, Who Saved Primo (Laterza 2023; TIR Prize – The Italian Review and the City of Ceglie Messapica Prize, translated into Spanish, Dutch, French, Portuguese, and English, and currently being translated into Russian), Stories That Don't Make History (Laterza 2024, currently being translated into Catalan), and My Daughter. The Life of Franca Jarach, Desaparecida (Laterza 2025, currently being translated into Spanish).
Following this, in Largo Audiffredi, a concert by Canta fino a 10, a singer-songwriter collective founded in Turin in 2021 by five singer-songwriters (Anna Castiglia, Cheriach Re, Francamente, Irene Buselli, Rossana De Pace) from five different cities (Catania, Como, Turin, Genoa, Taranto), who have shared stages and values ever since. Being together on stage is a metaphor for the collective, whose aims are sharing and representation: each singer's songs are sung by multiple voices and the instruments are passed from hand to hand, making music a tool of unity and resonance. Together they have performed widely across Italy, including on important stages such as Eurovision Village (Turin, 2022), New Year's Eve in Turin (Piazza Castello, 2023), and the Auditorium Agnelli with Vinicio Capossela (Turin, 2023). In June 2024 they performed at Milan Pride.
Following, again in Largo Audiffredi, will be a stand-up comedy by Giorgia Mazzucato, a transfeminist actress, author, and director who is touring with her socially and civically oriented monologues. She is also known online for her satirical comics. She is the author of the book "Komorebi – a Queer Book," based on her successful play of the same name. She is the artistic and educational director of the SB Teatro school and the voice of several podcasts, including "Conversazioni di coppia sul mondo che scioglie." She has won numerous awards, including "Best International Artist" at the San Diego Fringe Festival (California) and was a finalist at the National Queer Theatre's "Criminal Queerness Festival" (Brooklyn, New York).
Closing out the evening was a concert at the NUoVO venue by the Funky Club Orchestra, a seven-piece band that gave life to a wild and improvised live show, getting the audience dancing and sweating to the rhythm of funk, soul, electronica, and disco music. Their #StayfunkyTour in their very first year (2023) saw them join Willie Peyote as the resident orchestra for the Nebbiolo Prize, headline the ATP Tennis White Night for the City of Turin, and perform at the Royal Museums. In 2024, they will be performing a new tour, numerous festivals from North to South, all the way to Sicily, a collaboration with Tuma Records, and the release of two singles: Jungle and Marechiare, available on all digital platforms.
