Written shortly before the Russian Revolution, The Cherry Orchard presages great social change and the emancipation of serfs from wealthy landowners, but it is also a lucid examination of the bourgeoisie's inability to confront a fleeting present. Thus, the director leads the audience into a garden/theater that now lives only in the memories of its performers, entrusting the cast with a bitter comedy that is a metaphor for theater.
