Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, inspired by Victor Hugo's play Le roi s'amuse. Due to Austrian censorship, the story was set at the court of the Duke of Mantua. The opera premiered to success at La Fenice in Venice on March 11, 1851.
The story centers on Rigoletto, court jester to the Duke of Mantua. After mocking the Count of Monterone, whose daughter has been seduced by the Duke, Rigoletto is cursed. Meanwhile, the Duke sneaks into the house and, posing as a poor student, courts Rigoletto's daughter Gilda under false pretenses, declaring his love for her. Believing her to be the jester's lover, some courtiers kidnap her and take her to the palace. The courtiers inform the Duke that they have kidnapped Rigoletto's lover, and the Duke, realizing that Gilda is at the palace, joins her.
Rigoletto, determined to exact revenge, orders the assassin Sparafucile to kill the Duke. Gilda, however, is still in love with him and chooses to sacrifice herself to save him: she enters the inn and is killed in his place. At midnight, Rigoletto returns to the inn, and Sparafucile delivers the body to him in a sack. The jester, believing he has achieved his revenge, is about to throw it into the river when he hears the Duke's voice. Paralyzed, he looks in the sack and discovers Gilda, who, dying, begs his forgiveness and dies in his arms. Rigoletto, in despair, realizes that Monterone's curse has come true.
