Folk songs from around the world
On Tuesday, September 23, at 9:00 PM, the Sala San Giovanni in Cuneo (Via Roma 4) will host the concert “Desh: voices, stories, emotions from the peoples of five continents,” in which the Choir of the Società Corale Città di Cuneo, forty-two voices directed by Maestro Giuseppe Cappotto, will perform a repertoire of popular a cappella music from around twenty countries around the world, all performed in their original languages and with impressive arrangements.

The evening's program includes lullabies, work and holiday songs, dance pieces, and farewell songs. Each song is dedicated to a specific emotion, and listening to them allows us to conceptually and ideally connect seemingly distant worlds. Of the nineteen songs on the program, seven come from the Near East and Asia, five from the Americas; the other continents are represented with three songs, Europe, and two each from Africa and Oceania. The songs were chosen not so much for geographic representation, but to offer the audience the widest possible variety of melodies and, in particular, to explore in greater depth a new and little-explored repertoire such as Asian music in Italy. The program includes not only the title, country of origin, and the name of the composer or arranger of each song, but also a short, evocative phrase taken from each text and translated into Italian, providing listeners with a key to understanding the music that would otherwise be more difficult or entirely impossible due to language barriers.
