Flavors and Knowledge: Tour of the Historic Center and Tastings at the Market
As early as the Middle Ages, the city of Cuneo's strategic location favored the emergence of the first commercial activities, spurring significant economic development and leading to the creation of a veritable city market.
Even today, every Tuesday, the historic center comes alive: residents from across the province and international visitors flock to the stalls on Via Roma and Piazza Galimberti to shop for all kinds of goods, soaking up the lively and authentic atmosphere.
Discover the authentic heart of Cuneo with a bilingual guided tour (Italian + French or Italian + English) among the beauties of the historic centre and the unmistakable flavours of its traditional Tuesday market.
The tour will begin in Piazza Foro Boario, the city's new gateway, which pays tribute to the Baladin brewery's entrepreneurial history and the area's livestock farming tradition. The route will then descend to Via Santa Croce, admire the monumental complex of San Francesco, and recall the significant research and development work carried out by agronomist Vincenzo Virginio in the field of potato cultivation.
The tour continues with an external visit to the Town Hall and anecdotes and stories related to Piedmontese chocolate and liqueurs, displayed in the historic Caffè Bruno. Continuing, we'll visit the Mondovì district with its historic shops, restaurants, and wine bars, evoking the salt roads and the influences that form the basis of our gastronomy. We'll then admire the elegant restored facades of the ancient main district, recalling the passage of Pope Pius VII as Napoleon's prisoner, and the anecdotes related to the menu offered to him by the Lovera family.
A glance at the cathedral's imposing façade and you'll arrive at the entrance to the grand Piazza Galimberti, lined with historic businesses such as the Arione pastry shop, the Boetti pasta factory, the Ariano delicatessen, and the Giraudo confectionery shop with its colorful display of over 300 types of candy, to name a few.
From the square, you'll move to the food market for delicious stops at select stands and tastings featuring delicious products sourced primarily from our Alpine valleys, which may vary depending on the season.
