Based on the novel of the same name by Prosper Mérimée, Carmen is an opéra-comique by Georges Bizet composed of four scenes, with a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy.
Plot
In 1820, in the square of Seville, the young Micaela is waiting for Don José, who is enchanted by one of the cigar girls who has just left the factory, Carmen, who seduces everyone by singing a sensual Habanera. The woman comes face to face with Don José, throws him a flower, and Don José ignores Micaela, who brings him greetings from his distant mother. A fight breaks out among the cigar girls, and Carmen is arrested. But Don José, having obtained from her a promise of her love, helps her escape. Two months later, in Lillas Pastia's tavern, Carmen rejects the amorous advances of the bullfighter Escamillo because she loves Don José and is waiting for him to be released from prison, where he had been sentenced for facilitating her escape. Alone with Carmen, Don José declares his love, and the gypsy begins to dance for him, but the trumpet sounds, calling the soldiers to retreat. José wants to return to avoid further punishment, but Carmen tests him, saying that if he chooses duty over her, then he doesn't truly love him. Don José, sensing his superior's attraction to Carmen, rebels and challenges him to a duel. The gypsy calls for help from the smugglers who separate them, but José has no choice but to flee with Carmen and join the outlaws in the mountains. Meanwhile, Escamillo has appeared and immediately clashes with his rival. Carmen separates them, and Escamillo, who has now won the woman's heart, walks away. Don José senses this and threatens the woman, but when Micaela announces that her mother is dying, Don José follows her. On the day of the bullfight, the crowd awaits the matador's triumphant entrance, and Carmen, after passionately greeting Escamillo, is joined by Don José, still in love with Carmen, and begs her to return with him, promising to accept the adventurous life she desires. The gypsy refuses and throws him the ring he had given her. Blinded by rage, Don José stabs Carmen to death. Upon leaving the arena, the crowd finds him with his beloved's body in his arms. While shouting Carmen's name, Don José surrenders to the gendarmes, confessing to having killed her.
With Carmen, Bizet completely innovated the tradition of Opéra-comique, in some ways heralding aspects of verismo, and keeping in mind references to an author he loved very much, Giuseppe Verdi.
