1946 was a decisive year for women. After a long journey marked by conflicts, demands, and crucial experiences such as the Resistance, first with the March local elections, and then with the June 2 referendum and the election of the Constituent Assembly, women voted and were elected for the first time. They were born voters and elected. The twenty-one constituents arrived at Montecitorio, and their contribution to the Constitution established the principles that the battles of subsequent generations of women, activists, feminists, and parliamentarians—both left and right—would translate into concrete laws and new rights: divorce, abortion, protected motherhood, equal pay, family law reform. But what is the current state of those rights? And does having a woman in Palazzo Chigi for the first time truly tell us of a country in which the fight for full citizenship for women can be considered won? Reconstructing forgotten events and exploring the extraordinary biographies of women who have been ignored for too long, Marianna Aprile, in La promessa (Rizzoli), retraces an eighty-year-long story that we should all know, and ultimately asks what remains of the promise of women's suffrage: do women still think of voting as "a wonderful thing," as Lula Tonini defined it in 1946?
