Penelope: the wait and determination of a woman in command
. Penelope is the emblem of waiting. She awaits Odysseus, husband and hero, who left twenty years earlier for a war from which all the other Achaeans have returned. Odysseus, shipwrecked on the Mediterranean seas by Poseidon's will, is a myth that has spanned the centuries.
Penelope, however, fights her war at home: alone to lead Ithaca, surrounded by suitors who threaten her son, she waits, endures, and resists. With the means her time affords her, she challenges male power, countering the arrogance of the Suitors with female strength and stubbornness.
Like the Homeric heroine who wove and unwound her web, our Penelope tells her story over and over again, reconstructing the past and imagining the future, in a tale that unites myth and everyday life, resistance and hope.
