FREE TO MAKE MISTAKES: PIETRO LACASELLA AND THE MOUNTAINS PAST AND PRESENT

During their university years, Primo Levi, Sandro Delmastro, and Alberto Salmoni climbed the mountains, as many friends do. But those were dark times, difficult times. Pietro Lacasella returned to those paths, to those mountain pastures the three young men had ridden, and to the places where they took refuge after September 8, 1943. There are certainties, clues, deductions, and even a few fantasies, because the passage of time devours evidence and leaves room for imagination. Yet in "Free to Make Mistakes," published by People, Lacasella paints a unique portrait, illuminating a little-known side of Primo Levi's story: climbing, skiing, and a sense of freedom to be rediscovered. Lacasella, an anthropologist, ventured into those mountains in the summer of 2022 and explored tirelessly until winter. How much have the mountains changed? How much have human beings changed in contact with these rock giants? The exploration continues in a conversation across the mountain.
