CALL THEM BY THEIR NAME – Day of Remembrance for Victims of Immigration at Sea

DAY OF MEMORIAL FOR IMMIGRATION VICTIMS AT SEA

Cuneo – Via Roma, with an evening of testimonials at the Lanteri. Migrantes and Caritas.

Established in Italy by Law No. 45 of 2016, October 3rd is celebrated as the Day of Remembrance and Welcome, to remember and honor the victims of immigration, particularly those of the tragic shipwreck off Lampedusa on October 3, 2013, in which 368 people lost their lives. In recent years, it is estimated that thousands of people have lost their lives in the Mediterranean. The risk is that these periodic war bulletins can become habituated and inured to, leading people to believe that these tragedies are inevitable. The Day therefore promotes awareness-raising, welcoming, and solidarity initiatives to foster a culture of inclusion and combat racism and discrimination.
The initiative aims to be a moment of reflection to remember that, beyond the numbers, behind those tragedies were people with names and stories... different stories, but with the common denominator of pain and desperation, as one witness said: "dying at sea or in your own country doesn't make much difference, but by undertaking this 'journey' we at least have a glimmer of hope."
