A border line • Events for Remembrance Day
On Monday 24 February, two events (one reserved for schools and one open to the public) linked to Remembrance Day with Greta Sclaunich, author of Le foibe spiegate ai ragazzi (Piemme).
Many small, diverse stories, all together telling a page of History with a capital H, and inviting us to keep the light of remembrance burning, lest we forget. There is a piece of Italian history that still struggles to find space in school textbooks and, more generally, in the collective memory. It is the story of Istrians, Fiume, and Dalmatians: men and women born and raised in a borderland who, during the Second World War, experienced the tragedy of the foibe and then the exodus. Like Erminia, who was only twelve years old when she saw a dear family friend disappear into the terrifying Karst chasms. Graziano, whose soul is still entangled in that night when he fell into the endless void of a foibe, from which he miraculously survived. Italia, who clutches her red teapot, symbolizing the day when, to remain Italian, she was forced to leave her home and her land in the name of an unknown future. Or Fabio, whose childhood memories of the shacks of refugee camps are filled with sadness and nostalgia.
On the occasion of Remembrance Day, two appointments with Greta Sclaunich, author of the book Le foibe spiegate ai ragazzi (Piemme), written in collaboration with theNational Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmazia.
Greta Sclaunich, a journalist for the Corriere della Sera, was born and raised in the province of Gorizia. She studied in Trieste and worked in Paris and Sofia. She currently lives in Milan but suffers from a constant nostalgia for Friuli Venezia Giulia, its landscapes, and its stories.
